Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the Yankees and pitching coach Matt Blake agreed to a three-year deal, though the club has not announced it. Keeping Blake makes sense after New York led the majors with a 3.23 ERA in 2026, but bringing back Blake, Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman also means much of the leadership stays in place after another disappointing postseason.
Greg Joyce of the New York Post, via Yahoo Sports, sees second base as a possible way for Volpe to stick with the Yankees next year after losing the shortstop job. I’m glad he fought his way back, but a good finish shouldn’t hand him a starting spot. Let him compete for it, because we…
Bryan Hoch of MLB.com lists Ryan Jeffers and Tyler Stephenson as potential catching upgrades for the Yankees. I’d rather pay for someone who can compete for starts than fill the backup spot just to give the starter a day off. Make them earn the playing time; we shouldn’t be handing anyone a job.
News Goldschmidt wants to play next year, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post, with the details from Charlie Wright at MLB Trade Rumors. I’d be okay with him coming back to hit against lefties, but where are the at-bats with Rice and García here? Rice needs to play every day, so I wouldn’t…
The Yankees are expected to make David Bednar a qualifying offer but are unlikely to do the same for Jazz Chisholm Jr., according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post (paid subscription). I want Bednar back, but $23.15 million for one year is a lot to commit to a closer. If they let Jazz…
Bednar and Blackburn are both headed for free agency, as Peter Sblendorio of the New York Daily News notes, via Yahoo Sports. I want both back, because fixing the lineup won’t do us much good if we’re suddenly scrambling to cover the late innings. Cashman has found useful arms before, but I don’t want the…
Reporter analysis Brendan Kuty of The Athletic says he doesn’t believe the Yankees will fire Boone. I don’t think changing the manager fixes everything, but keeping him shouldn’t mean everyone gets a pass either. If Boone is back, I want to know what he and Cashman are actually going to change.
